Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R1ZH7I0KRYKN5S I'm not convinced about the "30 frames per second" claim -- looks slightly blurry when moving, but it's not as bad as some others I've seen. The "SVGA" spec is for still snapshots, not video. Features suggest it could work with MSN Messenger, Yahoo IM, AOL IM, Skype. You can attach a video to an email message, or post a video online to YouTube or other sites. File size appears to be about 150KB/second, or almost 10MB/minute -- email attachments will have to be only a few minutes long, or you could lower the Frame Rate or the Resolution (icon above the lower blue bar) to reduce file size. Change the size of the two windows in VLounge by clicking-and-dragging the center gray 'image-video' bar.
The software installation has two successive "Choose Language/English" boxes, so the second one looks like an error. It's not -- it's for the Camgoo installation, so go ahead and permit that one, too. There are three other apps that get installed; Mio should let you access this webcam from another PC (e.g., at work) but I haven't tried it. Camgoo is a game where you should be able to put your face on one of the characters. SIPPS is a video calling, headset app. It asks you for your IP address. If you don't know what that is, choose the bottom one on the list and see if it works. If none of them work, your Firewall may be getting in the way (too complicated for this review).
Vista drivers are at philips.com/support, search for model SPC 600NC. On the results page, click the link on the left column for 'software and drivers' - don't bother searching for Vista in a Search Box (not found). There are links for drivers for XP, ME, 98, 98SE, and Windows 2000.
MAC OSX and LINUX/NUX - no drivers here. LINUX types know what to do.
There's an FAQ page, but it's fairly lame.
They say Skype 2.0 should work with XP.
A laptop with an external unpowered USB hub might not supply enough current to run any webcam - eliminate the hub.
The USB connector has a sticker over it telling you to install the software before plugging in the camera - I was impressed with that little detail.
Quickstart printed manual is in 8 languages. User Manual is a PDF that's installed with the software so you can read it on-screen or print it.
Some setup: In the VLounge application (camera capture), pull down Preferences, Capture Settings. The 'flickerless' setting is for indoor lighting - using it may increase the brightness too much, but there's a brightness adjustment nearby. There's a 'region' setting for 50Hz or 60Hz - USA is 60Hz, many other countries are 50Hz, and the default is 50 -- go change it if you're in the US.
You'll also find a microphone volume setting nearby - mine was too low until I raised it, and now it's just a little noisy. I don't see a simple way to swap in a different microphone, but I could be wrong - I'll try the SIPPS stuff or just plug in a mike and see what happens.
My first installation gave me some anti-virus popups for HideExec.BM/MioNet. Mio is one of the apps that comes with it. I uninstalled, rebooted, reinstalled and had no issues. Good anti-virus software should react to anything that looks suspicious (including an app that lets another PC get into this one, like Mio does) so sometimes you have to make a judgment call and accept it (or else Mio won't work).
There's a little white LED lamp over the lens to alert you that it's on -- it's not enough to illuminate you. Goes off when you close the VLounge app. Focus the lens by spinning it. Color seems fair, there are some adjustments - Red, Blue, Frame Rate, Auto color, Auto White Balance, Brightness (not much variance), Contrast, Gamma (width of the color palette), Saturation (color strength), B&W, Backlight compensation (not much difference), and Mirror that flips the image left to right.
You can do single-frame snapshots using a pushbutton on the side of the camera or an icon in the VLounge application.
VLounge is mildly intuitive. Make it full-size to get the biggest images. If you're uploading say, to YouTube, make your image about the same size as your final posted image to get a good test. Then go look at the final posting to see if you could touch up anything to improve it.
For under $20, I don't think you'll find anything dramatically better. Some users here have reported smooth sailing with Vista, others report a nightmare (you did capture a Restore Point before you began, right?). Mine works OK on XP Pro/Service Pack 3, 2GB RAM, 2.80gHz single Intel processor desktop through a USB 2.0 PCI card. The 'dock' lets you lift off the camera and handle so you can use the dock as a single USB port (more like a 7 foot / 2 meter USB extension cord). The base is a little slippery, so the USB cord tends to 'choose' where the camera points. I added some rubber feet, but you could just set something on the cord. I also got a little less audio dropout by stopping the Windows "Themes" Service, thanks to advice from Eric Gosh.

Great Deal October 13, 2008 Jeremy Almeter (Virginia Tech) This was a very cheap webcam, but it does exactly what I expected for the value. I have seen higher quality cams, but not for this price. The refresh rate was rather consistent and quick. It works well with yahoo messenger, which is what I got it for. My girlfriend uses it to communicate with me while I am away at college. It has worked well so far, with no noticeable problems. That said, that is all we've really used it for.
IT WORKS GREAT BUT.... October 2, 2008 Jeremy R. Higashiyama (Rancho Cucamunga, California) IT WORKS GREAT BUT SOMETIMES IT FREEZES UP WHEN USING IT ON YAHOO AND MSN MESSENGERS... IF ANYONE CAN HELP ME I WOULD BE VERY THANKFUL... ANOTHER THING IS THAT THE MICROPHONE ON IT SUCKS IF USED... I CANT RECORD ANY SOUND WITH IT AND THE SOUND JUST COMES OUT TO SCRATCHY AND STATICKY... ALTHOUGH OTHER THEN THOSE ITS OKAY IT HAS GOOD PICTURE THOUGH! THESE PROBLEMS ARENT A BIG THING FOR ME SINCE 1 I'M NOT LOOKING AT THE CAM THE PERSON ON THE OTHER END IS...
