1 out of 5 stars Disappointed   December 30, 2008
Michelle B (WI, USA)
I bought this scanner from Wal-Mart, Brookstone and Bath and Body Works. All are the exact same as this one, they just have different labels. The live-feed software overworked my computer, took an extremely long time to save, and the scans came out dull, most with an odd blue/grey tint that I'm guessing came from it's attempt to auto-correct. The software color correction didn't help.

I tried with 3 different scanners, 2 different computers and multiple rolls of film. I even tried other peoples film in case mine had gotten damaged during storage. All of the colors were horrible and all of the scanners were returned.

got this item for xmas and was really excited to get started. But unfortunately found that this is not at all a good product. Because the light is so strong in the unit and there is no way to adjust it makes the images extremely washed out and unable to get a quality image. Slides that look great to the naked eye are extremely horrible when they come up on the screen. When you first put the slide into the unit you are able to see a clear image until the light totally filters through and then it completely ruins the image. The software does not do much to fix the problem. If there was a way to filter the light or turn down the setting on how much light was coming through this would solve the problem. There are several different companies that make this same kind of converter and they all seem to have the same problem with them. Why is is so hard for them to figure out their problem and make a better product. maybe just a dimmer switch or a filter to put over the slide itself before scanning. DUH doesn't seem so hard to me. Get your act together VuPoint!!

3 out of 5 stars Get what you pay for   December 29, 2008

It scans the slides like it is supposed to. Paper owner manual is a little unclear, and could be written in a manner that the novice will understand. All in all you paid under $100, and that is what you get for your money.

5 out of 5 stars Great little scanner!. Gets the job done!!   December 27, 2008

This scanner was a gift and I was a bit skeptical before I started using it. However I was pleasantly surprised that it is quite well built and very simple to operate.

Installing the software was a snap and only took a few minutes. Operation is just as easy: simply insert slides, wait a few seconds for the scanner to adjust, and click to snap the frame! Results are excellent considering I'm scanning 40 year old slide that have been in the closet for years. Within the first hour, I'd installed the drivers, scanned a dozen slides, played with the images (cropped, created an album, etc) and printed both 4x6 photos and an 8x10 album. The printer output (Cannon PIXIMA) was excellent with vivid colors and excellent detail.

Needless to say I'm very pleased with the results of just the first hour of use. I'd been planning for months to use my flat bed scanner scan the thousands of slides in the closet, but I never got started because I knew the process would be so tedious. Now that I have the VuPoint scanner, I'm already well on my way to completing the project. If you've been procrastinating or wondering if this would get a big job done, wait no more: this little scanner is really capable and well worth the cost!

2 out of 5 stars Allright for BW   December 23, 2008
John A. Nelson
I have had this scanner for 6 months or so...it took quite while to get the software installed and the manual is skimpy and pretty much worthless....luckily the software is pretty intuitive...I used the Arc Soft software for the free 30 day period but switched over to Elements when I discovered that the adjustments for color were just too crude...I first used this scanner for old BW negatives and I have to say that it worked admirably...the contrast, brightness adjustments were just about what was needed....switching over to color slides was a different proposition...the color scans (without any intervention) are sharp but the color shift is ridiculous...it goes off in any old direction it seems to want and there are no adjustments within the scanner itself....so I would say that if you want to scan old 35mm BW negs for your private use...go for it....for anything else pay some more money...I am going to have to...the unit is very well built and easy to use...the cutouts for negs and slides cuts off part of the image
