4 out of 5 stars works pretty well   January 7, 2009
Robyn C. (Honolulu, HI)
We got the printer about a month ago and it's been working well. It prints quickly and clearly and scans cleanly. We do not use the fax function. My only complaint (and the reason for the four stars rather than five) is that we must start the scan from the computer--it won't work to press the scan button on the printer. Otherwise we are loving it!

1 out of 5 stars COMPLETE JUNK * HP SAYS THIS UNIT HAS MAJOR DEFECT   December 30, 2008
John Zilinskas (USA)
Do not buy this machine (or ANY HP for that matter), it is complete junk. I had mine for 4 months, not even 100 (scan, fax, copy etc) operations total and it failed. Service center where I took this unit to be fixed over three weeks ago, told me HP said these units have major internal electrical design problems, and back order of parts to fix. I have waited over three weeks in the hp authorized repair shop with no end in sight to when I will get my machine back. Even then I will not trust it. Had to buy another machine because I need one bad, so I bought a Brother MFC-7840W and could not be happier. Will use the HP as a doorstop when I get it back, if I ever do. HP is NOT the company it once was, AVOID. High price, low qulity. Try to get a CSR to help you . Nightmare.

5 out of 5 stars This machine works better than its predecssor, the 3390 HP Multi-Function-quicker and smooth, would recommend!   December 20, 2008
Stuart H. Galesburg (Chicago, IL - USA)
This 1522nf HP Multi-Function I use for business and personal, mostly business, and it is quicker than its predecessor, the HP Multi-function 3390. The laser jet reading ability is also appearing much clearer in reading documents, whether by fax or just copying. I would recommend same as it comes with a one year warranty from the factory-HP, and 3 year extended plans are available.
Merry Christmas-12/20/2008-Stuart-Chicago,IL.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing HP MFP   November 30, 2008
Z (Albuquerque, NM USA)

I owned this MFP for about 4 weeks before it completely died. For about 2-3 weeks before it died I often noticed that it was unresponsive after having been idle for a day or so. The display would show the wrong date and time and none of the buttons could wake the machine up. My only choice was to cycle the power. I found this to be pretty aggravating since reaching the power button on the back left side was challenging, considering the printer was in tight space on a shelving unit - plus the unit is pretty tall to reach over the top. Anyhow, it finally decided not to come on anymore after the last time it froze up. Please keep in mind that the printer only froze up for me while it was "hibernating."

As far as when it did work, the print quality was very good and the speed was excellent. I actually liked the printer very much when it was working, except for the manual duplexer, which was clumsy and did not always work well. Sometimes it worked great and beeped when it was done with the odd sides and needed me to flip the pages over so it could print the even sides. However, sometimes it just printed one side and neglected the other side altogether.

Honestly, I'm not sure if the problem with this printer had to do with it being networked, using my Mac with it, my Qwest DSL modem/router, having it plugged into my Monster Cable Surge Protector along with other stereo and DVD equipment, or something else. Furthermore, my wife's laptop PC was never able to network with it and the Mac documentation online is very limited and practically nonexistent in the written manual.

Overall, it's a nice looking machine with very good color scanning and B&W printing capability. The networking and powering up from hibernating were very poor and I did not test the fax unit.

Amazon was gracious enough to let me return the item for a refund a week after the return window closed. However, it still cost me $30 in postage to return it. Not worth it for a month of use!

I previously used a Canon Pixma MP780 which was fair but had problems with the print head multiple times and eventually stopped printing in black and white! I would not recommend those either. It did have an excellent auto-duplexer, however, and the color prints were nice quality.

My best printer experience was with my old HP1100a laser jet which still works great after nearly 9 years. The only problem is that it is not compatible with my new Mac, hence my searching for a new multifunction laser printer

5 out of 5 stars replaced a $4k copy machine   November 18, 2008

I didn't need a printer.
I didn't need a fax machine.
I needed to replace a 9 year old (dead) xerox fax machine, that would have been $4k.

What is amazing, is that for the ridiculously low price of this machine, I got an awesome copier. I'm very happy.
