Love this Printer January 6, 2009 Willard L. Lowery Purchased the Printer for my wife to use exclusively for her photos she take with her new Digital Camera. Great pictures from the printer and the camera!
Photos better than lab prints December 27, 2008 D. West (Los Gatos, CA United States) I recently acquired this HP printer to replace a poorly designed Epson which did little for me other than drink ink during its many cleaning cycles, and never feed paper correctly. So far, the HP has not jammed, even with different weight media, and does not seem to be overly hogging the ink for cleaning.
My one complaint, although judging by others' reviews that the included software causes errors, or is otherwise not being utilized as intended, it is (in the Windows environment) only for the XP and Vista OS. I still use Win2K and had been concerned if I could load a driver for the printer. Well, you can, but not by any automatic method. Just bypass the autorun, use plug & play hardware detection, then point to the CD as the source for the drivers. There is indeed a Win2K folder in the supplied disc, and the drivers work fine on my Win2K system.
As for photo editing and scanning, I have a scanner for film/slides/prints, and use Photoshop for additional tweaks, so I generally get what I want without worrying or wondering what choice tidbits HP included in their software package.
During a recent test I found the original slide I had lab printed 30 years ago. I scanned the slide, set it up with Photoshop, and printed onto HP quality photo paper with this printer. I honestly think the inkjet print is sharper than the lab print from 30 years ago (of course, perhaps a lab could do a better job today, but it's nice to be able to create these prints on my own).
I don't need networking in a printer, so that wasn't a feature I looked for. I wanted a printer with outstanding photo quality, relatively inexpensive inks, and (hopefully) some decent longevity in its design. So far, I'm pleased with the results; its price is quite low overall, so unless you're a stickler needing color laser quality, there's nothing wrong with going for the D5460.
HP D5460 December 15, 2008 T. Black (Slippery Rock, PA) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Replaced a 4 year old Epson R300 Printer with The HP D5460.
First, if you ever used an Epson Printer for printing CD or DVD are you ever going to be disappointed with the HP. You don't have the flex ability in sizing. With max setting I get a hairline area that the printer won't print on up the right side of the disc. Email HP tech support over 2 months ago and there problem solving was worthless. Just very little adjustments. Epson Software you could do just about everything to include move it all around for alignment.
Second, HP Home Essential Software just sucks. I don't know how else to describe it. Very limited software for editing just about everything. You have to use a different program to edit a cd/DVD picture the way you want it then go to HP software to print. You can not even scan cd/DVD's into the HP CD/DVD print software.
Print quality is good if you use high quality printing but you will use ink.
I have used this printer for 2 months before writing a review and I am glad I did. Try to print off size envelopes. A breeze with Epson, not HP. I am going to sell this printer as soon as my new epson arrives. I will never buy HP printer again!
HP D5460 and Sharing December 11, 2008 G. Klepp (New Jersey) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This unit prints fine provided that you do not want to SHARE the printer between two computers. The HP web site gives directions on how to set the printer up for sharing, but alas... it refuses to share. Discussions with HP "Technical (non)Support" for over an hour proved to less than frutful as the Tech Rep had no clue about anything technical... especially printers. A call to "HP Central" in California led to a Senior Case Manager (an impressive title, eh?) who proceed to tell me that the printer does not support sharing or networking. I explained that the HP Tech Support Web Page had directions for setting up sharing and even, WIRELESS NETOWRKING, oh my!. At that point, The Senior Case Manager said that if I had any issues with sharing and networking, I would have to resolve them myself because... wait for it... they don't support sharing or networking. Anyway, while its a cheap printer, there are some principals involved here (or lack of on HP's part) and the thing is already packed for the return trip. NO MORE HP PRODUCTS HERE!
Great Deal on an Excellent Printer November 4, 2008 Edwin Parker (San Jose, CA USA) I was looking for a replacement for my older HP Photosmart printer, specifically one with CD/DVD direct print capability. I found it in the D5460, and then some.
It only took a short time to understand the workings and I printed a couple of DVD's the first night. By the third day, I had printed over 40 and each time I improved until It was just another task. I now print several discs every day and it is so easy.
The print quality and dry time are excellent. A sample pack of heavy photo paper was included and I lost one of the three due to a subject's head being cut off. I just moved it down a bit and voila! I couldn't tell it from a print from One-Hour Photo. Clear, bright colors and very fast drying.
I am very happy with the product, the price and the service. My sincere thanks to Amazon.com and to the seller.
