So far so Good! January 1, 2009 JaneiR36 (Atlanta, GA) Oh, I just love reading reviews of products I've bought! Good or bad people share lots of great tips to increase the value of your product even further.
I bought this from a local store for $30 because our old desktop (which really needs to be dropped off a cliff by now, but the owner can't afford) needed Internet access and we already had a great Belkin "N" Wireless router.
Great tip #1 I read on here: Dump the Netgear program for day-to-day management of the Internet. Their program is clunky and keeps competing for attention with the regular Windows program, making it take LONGER to connect to the Internet. By deleting the shortcut -- NOT uninstalling the driver -- from the StartUp folder (just R click, and Cut), now I only get the cute Windows icon of a computer with the Radio signals beaming from it. Sweet! Also, what's ridiculous is when you disable the Windows program for whatever reason, it closes down the Netgear program which will never open again (or only flashes open for a second) until you Re-Enable the Windows program, so WTH is the point of the Netgear?!
I got great reception even by keeping the USB adapter behind the computer buried in furniture ("Very Good"). However, the adapter is pretty fat compared to slick little USB flash drives we have nowadays, for exmaple, and there's wires hanging back there that can push against the Adapter and can potentially weaken and break it, like for the keyboard, mouse, other USB devices, so we decided to use the Dongle to remote mount the adapter above the computer, anyway. By mounting it there, the signal also improves from "Very Good" to "Excellent."
Someone wrote that they like the blue blinking light. Holy c#^$! We covered it with 3 little squares of dark grey duct tape just so the light didn't keep bothering us.
Overall a great product and I hope it lasts. We've started printing Wirelessly to the printer attached to that computer but the only thing we haven't figured yet is waking the Computer up from StandBy to do that printing, 'cos it costs too much Electricity $$ to just leave the Computer on.
I'm guessing they've done some driver and possibly hardware updates because it seems to work great with Windows XP. Don't forget, install driver, THEN plug in Adapter. And if you download an update, you must follow the same sequence as well, after uninstalling the existing driver.
Does not work with HP desktop and Vista!!! December 27, 2008 B. Collins (New Jersey, USA) Bought this adapter to go with d-link router and my brand new hp desktop. As other reviewers have stated, it will not work at all. Six hours of calling Netgear Tech support, and I never even got through, just cut off after 15 minutes on hold EVERY TIME! We tried everything and finally returned it. Bought the Linksis WUSB54GSC and it installed in about 1 minute and works great. Dont waste your time with this product, way too frustrating.
Don't buy this; buy the PCMCIA version October 30, 2008 Shem (Silicon Valley USA) Should work easily like the PCMCIA version, WG511T (buy this instead!!), but DOESN'T. Instead it has its own special OS problems.
Good purchase July 23, 2008 Dan Fisher (New York City) I have enjoyed this product. It was definetly worth the money that I paid for it. I recomend it to anyone in need of an adapter.
Worked great... for about 5 minutes. July 2, 2008 R. C. Roper (Topanga Canyon, CA USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I ordered one of these Netgear USB Wifi dongles and plugged it into my computer's USB port. I found that it gave me a better signal than my internal PCI wifi card(also Netgear).
The problem is that the adapter seems to shut itself off (the light turns off and all network activity stops) after a couple of minutes, at which point I have to unplug it and plug it back in again, over and over again every few minutes.
I got this particular model because the price was good and Netgear has worked well for me in the past. This problem I'm having, however, makes this product a worthless waste of my time and shipping money (I'm getting a refund on the product itself). After reading the other negative reviews of this model, it looks like this is not just a fluke problem with my unit, so next time I'll try a different brand or model.
You have been warned.
